If you're a fan of these super-sized cities found throughout China - the ones that can seemingly take hours to traverse and are filled with pushy vendors, but decent-to-excellent food all around, and decent sights to see, then, like its cousins Xi'an, Beijing and Shanghai (although much cheaper), this city might be a positive addition to your trip.

I, however, didn't care for it much at all. Some of the sights were fun and there was shopping all around us, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for. There was nothing in the way of Southern China's (Yunnan province) hospitality and prices were on the up and up.

And as far as this hostel goes: the bed's mattresses were hard and lousy, the staff was impatient and irritable - at times downright unwilling to help and quite often too involved in their own business to properly address the questions/needs of their patrons; sometimes ignoring myself and/or my friends for long stretches of time as they finished up personal phone calls or newspaper ads.

The Hump undoubtedly had some of the least pleasant hostel staff I have come across in my travels, and if it were not for the hostel's additions (i.e. pool table, outdoor lounge, covered outdoor eating area, and advantageous location), I would strongly recommend travelers find different lodgings. As it is, at least prepare yourself for the uninviting staff.
