I was so impressed by my stay there. The studio apartment bila is a stone apartment by itself with it's own little outside space. The bedroom was clean and beautiful. It's located minutes' walk from the Old Town.

The man who runs the place is very helpful and helped move our car to a place where you can park for free.

I definitely recommend it!

"Mid December in Split"

My partner and I booked our reservation online and took a bus from Zagreb to Split. I've been to Split twice before, but this was my first visit in winter. Although it was warmer than in Zagreb (it was snowing in Zagreb when we left) it was still pretty cool in Split... from 1 to 10 C.

Our bus arrived in Split about an hour late because strong winds (called "bura") had part of the highway closed and we had to take a detour. There was no one to meet us at the station (but I don't think there was ever any mention that we would be met by anyone). There was a map of the town posted on a wall near where we got off the bus, so we quickly found our street and set off on foot as it was only about a ten minute walk. My partner is much better with maps and directions then I am, and she lead us right to the gate. It was open so we walked up the stairs and path to the main house.

There are some little stone cottages you can rent here as well, but we had booked the apartment on the second floor of the main house. The lady of the house met us at the door and her son quickly appeared to show us the apartment. He spoke English very well and was friendly and helpful.

The apartment was bigger than I expected. I nice little kitchen, a living room, small bathroom with a shower, and a good sized bedroom. There were little balconies off the living room and bedroom.

We had only one complaint. Obviously homes in split are designed to keep cool in summer, rather than warm in winter. The locals seemed unprepared for the extended cold weather. The windows and shutters that keep out the sun are not so great at keeping in the heat. There was an air conditioner in the apartment that had settings for heating, but it's location high up on the wall in the little hallway made it quite ineffecient. We gave up trying to get the kitchen warm, we just closed the door. We did manage to get the bedroom and bathroom semi warm but it was slow going. But the bed had extra blankets. (and really nice sheets!). The trick was to leave the heater going all the time and get the shutters closed when the sun went down and opened early when it came up to let the sun in. Anyway, the weather is not something our hosts could control. But I mention it here just so you are prepared for the possibility of a cold snap if you visit in winter.

Just down the hill from the apartment is the Fife restaurant. It has two buildings on either side of the street. The restaurant has a simple pub atmosphere but the food is always good. I've eaten there on each of my visits and have never been disappointed. There are lots of other restaurants all around the old town.

One thing though: Smoking is still allowed just about everywhere in Croatia. Some places were just too smoky for us. So we didn't try a few places that were obviously popular. If you are a smoker, or don't mind smoky places, you will have more places to choose form.

We visited the cafes along the front of Diocletian's Palace every morning for espresso and to sit in the sun, people watch, and plan our day.

During our stay we had a mix of sun and clouds. And the streets seemed very quiet to me compared to my summer visits. Still, the old town is beautiful and it was good weather for the walking trails on Marjan mountain.

Over-all it was a good, if chilly, stay in Split. It was a nice break from the gray skies of Zagreb. I would have no problem recommending the Bila to friends.
