Description - Guesthouse

Santa Teresa and Mal Pais are rather remote beach towns, and that is what makes them so special! Thankfully, even though we are a little off the beaten path, there are still quite a few services available to visitors. This is a excellent area to relax practicing of Yoga and Surf.

On the first floor, we have six private rooms, ideal for single travelers, couples or pairs of friends. The rooms have either a double bed or two single beds. We also have two larger private rooms on the first floor, each with beds for three people. Scroll down for photos and prices for our private rooms. Upstairs you will find the apartment plus three additional rooms with varying capacities, featuring exterior doors as well as interior doors connecting to the apartment. An abundance of shared bathrooms are also located on the first floor (there are many to choose from and they are always clean!).

We also have two well-equipped communal kitchens, including our signature chef’s kitchen, complete with a professional quality stove, microwave, blenders, and a giant stainless steel refrigerator. We offer a amazing Yoga deck with every day class. Our helpful, bilingual staff is always ready to help plan other tours and activities in the area, including surf lessons, canopy tours, stand up paddleboarding (SUP), visits to nearby waterfalls, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, horseback riding, ATV rentals and more. We can also assist you with restaurant recommendations, reservations and travel planning, so your trip can be totally relaxing and worry-free!

Kitchen

Our signature chef’s kitchen is a sight to behold: with a professional quality stove, giant stainless steel refrigerator, microwaves, blenders, high-quality cooking utensils, pans, woks, herbs, spices and more, this dream kitchen really sets Casa Zen apart from other guest houses. Check out our Thai-inspired cookbooks for ideas or just pick up some groceries at the supermarket across the street. We also have a smaller, communal kitchen open 24 hours for late night munchies. We always keep our kitchens sparkling clean for guests to enjoy.
Common Areas

Hang out with friends, enjoy a good book, or simply kick back and relax in one of our many common areas…

Rancho

The downstairs rancho is a favorite meeting place for Casa Zen guests. Lined with colorful pillows and featuring a beautiful tiled floor design, it’s a great spot to share a dinner, play a board game, make plans for the evening, or enjoy the access to our free wifi.

Hammocks upstairs and downstairs

Take your pick from more than a half dozen hammocks upstairs, relax and enjoy the treetop views. Or get comfy in one of our garden view hammocks downstairs. There’s no better way to perfect the art of doing nothing…

Bar area

We serve breakfast each morning at our bar, where you can also find travel guidebooks, tour information, and friendly advice from your Casa Zen receptionist!
Spa

After a day of surfing, a walk along the beach, or even the tiresome act of reading in a hammock, a nice massage in our spa is just what the doctor ordered. Situated amongst the lush, green tropical plants of our garden, with a serene mural of Buddha inviting you to relax, you will feel as if you are in another world as you melt onto the table with a relaxing massage. Treat yourself to this wonderful indulgence, while as always, keeping to your budget.

Also check out the daily yoga classes on our gorgeous open-air deck.
Surfboard and bicycle rentals

We have a variety of beginner and intermediate surfboards available for rent, advice on where to find the waves or how to book a surf lesson, just ask at reception.

One of the best ways to explore Santa Teresa and Mal Pais is to rent one of our comfy beach cruiser bicycles. Both visitors and locals frequently travel up and down our main dirt road on bicycles. Take a trip down to the Mal Pais fishmarket, visit new beaches or check out a restaurant off the beaten path… you’ll be going in style!
Wifi

We offer free wifi throughout Casa Zen, plus a public computer with internet access for $2/hour.

BBQ area Beach Bicycle rental Breakfast included Car rental Children permitted Gardens Gay friendly Meeting facilities Multi-lingual staff Parking (free) Safe deposit box Smoking not permitted Spa Sports/activities Tour/sightseeing assistance WIFI (free)

Room amenities

Our guest house offers a variety of options for every traveler. Whether you are looking for a private room, space for a small group, or a bed in a dorm, we have a comfortable place for you. On the first floor, we have six private rooms, ideal for single travelers, couples or pairs of friends. The rooms have either a double bed or two single beds. We also have two larger private rooms on the first floor, each with beds for three people. Scroll down for photos and prices for our private rooms!

The chef’s kitchen is open to guests between 8 a. m. and 8 p. m., while a second shared kitchen is available 24 hours. Upstairs you will find the apartment plus three additional rooms with varying capacities, featuring exterior doors as well as interior doors connecting to the apartment. This allows us some flexibility in renting them out depending on the size of your group.

The apartment itself has a capacity of two people, with a full-sized bed, hot water shower, full kitchen and television with DVD player. With the configuration upstairs, the apartment can be rented by itself, or with 1-, 2-, or 3-bedrooms attached, for a maximum capacity of 14 people. When the adjoining rooms are rented independent of the apartment, there is no access between the rooms and apartment. Scroll down to see photos and prices for our apartment and adjoining rooms. Our dorm room is also upstairs, which has beds for six people. The room has just three bunk beds, so it’s a a small, comfortable dorm compared to many hostels. There’s a safe for each person that’s big enough to fit a laptop, and we sell locks at the front desk for just $3. Scroll down to check out photos and prices for our dorm room. Help yourself to our fresh brewed Costa Rican coffee in morning, and have a seat while we serve you a healthy breakfast of seasonal local fruit (such as watermelon, papaya, pineapple and banana), toast, butter and jam. Our complimentary breakfast is served each day from 8 a. m. and 10 a. m.

Neighborhood

Santa Teresa and Mal Pais are rather remote beach towns, and that’s what makes them so special! Thankfully, even though we’re a little off the beaten path, there are still quite a few services available to visitors. At the crossroads between Mal Pais and Santa Teresa (locally known as “the cruce,” pronounced “crew-say”) where buses and cars arrive into town, there are two banks with ATMs. These are the only ATMs in town, so to make sure to get your money while you’re at the cruce!
